Doubles Mastery:
The Net Pressure System

Constant net pressure. Aggressive positioning. Australian formation all summer. This is how great doubles teams are made.

The Core Principle

Doubles is NOT level-based like singles. In doubles, the strategic imperative is constant net pressure — move forward, seize the net, and finish points decisively. Our 2026 curriculum is designed to force that mindset into every player's game.

Conceptual Foundation

Why Doubles Requires a Different Brain

Singles Thinking
Level-based: court position determines shot selection
Stay back and build points from the baseline
Advance to net only when attacking a short ball
Individual positioning and shot decisions
2026 Doubles Thinking
Net pressure first: always moving forward toward the net
Serve-and-volley every time — no exceptions, all season
Australian formation forces active net positioning
Poach, fake-poach, signal, and move as a synchronized unit
The Three Pillars

Deep Dive: The 2026 System

🇦🇺

Australian Formation Mastery

The most transformative change in doubles positioning

In Australian (I-) formation, the net player positions on the same side as the server rather than the traditional cross-court position. This forces both players to develop comfort and competence on both sides of the court, eliminates predictable cross-court returns, and creates genuine tactical confusion for opponents.

Why It Works
  • Removes predictable patterns
  • Forces active communication
  • Develops both-side fluency
  • Creates net pressure immediately
Skills Developed
  • Signaling systems
  • Court coverage awareness
  • Tactical reading of returner
  • Deuce/ad versatility
02

Mandatory Serve-and-Volley

Every serve is followed to the net — no exceptions, all season

This is a non-negotiable rule for all players, all summer. After every serve, the server moves immediately to the net. This commitment — uncomfortable at first — builds an aggressive forward momentum game that transforms how players think about doubles. By the end of 11 weeks, approaching the net feels natural, not scary.

Technical Drills
  • Split-step timing drills
  • First volley placement
  • Net-closing footwork
  • Transition zone volleys
Tactical Training
  • Wide serve + angle volley
  • T serve + approach volley
  • Body serve + jam volley
  • Reading the return early

Poaching & Net Domination

The net player is a weapon, not a spectator

The net player's job is to dominate. Through systematic poaching pattern training, players learn to read the rally, anticipate weak balls, move decisively to intercept, and finish points at the net. We also train the fake poach — a movement deception that opens angles and disrupts the returner's rhythm.

Poaching Patterns
  • Signal poach (partner triggers)
  • Instinct poach (read & react)
  • Fake poach + reset
  • Overhead finish from net
Finishing Shots
  • Cross-court winning angle
  • Down-the-line surprise
  • Swinging volley
  • Overhead smash close-out
